She hangs around the branches like a sloth: slow-moving, heavy, and indifferent. She is too tired to work her way up the tree, and doesn't care much about the world that lies below her. Don't ask how she got onto the branch.

Playboy Mansion / Monster Massive

I know this post has nothing to do with painting, or words, or painting words. But it's my blog, I love Halloween, and this weekend was ridiculous. And I needed something to put up while I finish up the "L" word (and I don't mean the tv show). Kinesthesia is the sense or sensation of movement, body position, or the movement of muscles, tendons and joints. Coming across this word immediately trigged a vivid memory from when I was nine years old: half bored and half curious, I wondered what it would feel like to feel nothing at all. I laid out flat on the carpet, and slightly lifted my arms and legs from the ground. Gravity never seemed heavier. I felt my muscles begin to tense up as my legs and arms started to lower to the floor. The feeling of weightlessness was combatted by my sense's ability to feel.

J t'aime = "I love you" in French. Dedicated to mon amour, Cyrus; It's about to be 4 years in a few weeks! I know, loong time. Thanks for the word, Santi. I decided to go with muter tones this time around-- I was getting a little sick from all the superbright rainbow colors and explosions (kind of like the bad feeling you get when you've eaten too much sugar) and wanted to express something more raw and organic.

I'm currently working on my pick for 'J', but in the meantime, I'll leave you with this. It's an editorial illustration that I just completed for an article about Virtual Ecstasy in URB Magazine. He's a soldier on a drug trip. Unfortunately in the end they decided not to go with it, so he makes his home here at PaintByWord. I shall call him Jack.

Ingenue. The beautiful, naive, leading lady--a character that is often repeated in films, theatre, and literature. Wikipedia describes her as gentle, sweet, virginal, and often challenged by another female character--the femme fatale.

This is the fastest illustration I've completed by far. 30 minutes. I wish all of them were so easy. =\

The Dance

One of the projects that kept me busy during my online absence was some album work for a Bay Area funk band called The Dance. They wanted to express a kind of post-apocalyptic party, where the land is barren, civilization is no more, and all the survivors have left to do is celebrate their life by getting down and funky. Holy hangover. I apologize for disappearing for so so long. For the past month or so, I've been busy with a bunch of different little projects, so I was forced to leave PBW on the back burner. But I'm back. For good I hope. If anything, I might just have to limit the every two-day illustrations to a once-a-week kind of thing. Anyway. I got the word from a Myspace friend, Mykola. As soon as I heard it, a scene from Sin City hit me hard, showing a cell where Elijah Wood's character displays his conquests of dead prostitues. This is my colorful interpretation of that scene.
